Art Blog Year 3 - Andrew Barge

Neil Gall
Neil Gall's work has influenced my own two important ways, the primary influence of his work is on my process which involves layering in a few different ways. Layering is a major part of all of his work. The second influence is on my material choice, I choose to work exclusively with paper which is a material the Gail works almost exclusively in.

Andre Masson
Masson's influenced my practise mostly because he is an abstract painter whose work I like and while his work is figurative while my own is not. He using a lot of different colours in his pieces without making the painting feel to crowded with colour which is something I try to emulate in my own work

Charline Von Heyl
The influence I took from Von Heyl's work was her use of colour, as she combines the colours mixing together and bold block colours within her paintings. Additionally within her work the paint has been applied in layers with is one way I incorporated layering within my own work.

Fiona Rae
Within Fiona Rae's work I looked to her use of both complimentary and contrasting colours within her paintings work, along with her combining block and blended colours. To take influence from and aid the development of my work, despite her paintings being having strong figurative elements within them where own work is the opposite of figurative.
Sarah Bowker-Jones
To develop the slight 3D aspect that I wanted to incorporate into a couple of pieces as well as to possibly go further with 3D than I have I looked in a sculpturally artist. I choose to look into Bowker-Jones's work because of her interesting colour usage for her sculptures, the colours are bright and distinctive which something I primarily go for within my paintings.
"Ever tried. Ever failed. No Matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better"- Samuel Becket
After being told about this quote by Samuel Becket, I realised that this quote embodies my main current working practise as every time I 'finish' a painting and whether or not I particularly like it I break it down and incorporate into another painting and this process repeats until I am satisfied with the outcome.
“Life is an abstract art, and it’s up to you to make sense of it.”- Talismanist Giebra
This quote shares similar ideals to my own project as when i create a painting I personally don't put a specific meaning behind each piece but what do find interesting is what other people see in my artwork. I like this approach as it means my paintings can be whatever the viewer thinks it is and nobody is wrong about the personal opinions in the end.
“Abstraction forces you to reach the highest level of the basics.” – Alan Soffer
I feel that this quote underpins a big part of my practise and current methodology as within my painting before I layer them I let the paint as a material mostly do what it wants to do when it leaves my hand to let it speak for itself, preferring to guide the paint with how apply it rather than constricting and controlling it. This method can be seen as really simplistic and basic approach to painting.
